2021: Gabbrielle Thonglert
Gabby is the daughter of Chad Tonglert, Sofeary Padgett and Sam Padgett. She is grateful to her birth parents who courageously immigrated to the United States from Cambodia before her birth. She is the second of their four children and a first generation college student.
Gabby has attended Wake County throughout her K-12 education. Her involvement in the school includes service through Key Club, HOSA – Health Occupations Students of America, moving from last chair to first chair in the viola section of the school chamber orchestra, and becoming President of the Social Justice Club.
Coming of age in her family gave her special insight into the value of health and the structural inequalities inherent in the US healthcare system. She realized the power of education and knowledge in this particular field could not only help her own family, but she could leverage her understanding to help other families as well. Gabby decided to become trained to be an EMT – Emergency Medical Technician – and she has been actively training in the field, during a pandemic, for the last year. She wrote, “ It is my responsibility to complete patient assessments, take vitals and provide treatment. I’ve worked with patients as old as 100 and as young as 3 weeks old . . . when the life of someone is placed in my hands, it is my duty to step forward and take initiative. Volunteering in this field means sometimes seeing brutal scenes and sacrificing personal events, but I am passionate about emergency medicine and helping and supporting individuals in a vulnerable state. “
Maintaining a 4.4 GPA, Gabby will be attending UNC-Wilmington and pursuing a degree in Biology. She aspires to be a Doctor of Emergency Medicine.
